I’m about to do a bunch of months shooting where I’ll be doing a lot of travel in rural Mexico. I want to take a tripod that’s light. I’ll be using a Panasonic HMC-150 and a Canon XA10. Anyone have any thoughts about what might be a good tripod for a trip with a lot of travel?

Do you have a budget, or whatever works as long as the price is fairly practical.

The Manfrotto 503 head + carbon fiber 536 legs has been a solid combo for me. Weighs in, according to spec, at 11 pounds.

That’s actually what I have now. But I’m hoping for something lighter if possible.

There’s a Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head that with sticks weighs 8.3 lbs. Never tried it. I suspect it will be harder to make very smooth moves with this one than with your 503. I could be wrong….

If no one comes up here with something they love that weighs less than 11 lbs, I’d suggest you do a search on B&H, “professional tripod systems”. Set the range of price you are interested in, sort low to high, and work your way through.

Let us know what you end up with and how you like it!
