What are current best lipstick cameras?
Posted by Seth Marshall on August 30, 2012 at 12:33 amI need a lipstick for a new series and haven’t heard anything new regarding lipsticks for awhile. I figured I may have missed something. The best I have used are the Sony MC1 but it doesn’t do 24p I think.
Specifically I would prefer a camera attached to a CCU/(monitor) by a cable. 24p/30p options would be great.
Thanks

The Go Pro Hero 2 has pretty much taken over for POV and small “lipstick” type camera use. It’s cheap, easy to mount and now has WiFi control. Check out their website:

I don’t think it’s a case of “no one cares,” but rather “no one knows.”
I’d wager most of the cinematographers in here have need for lipstick cameras so infrequently that none of us have used a wide variety of them nor are qualified to pick a “best.”
And as John said, the non-lipstick GoPro has taken over almost all of that work, at least in our business. Good quality, easily hacked with different/better lenses, and no need for a different/external recorder. And a throw-away pricetag.

September 3, 2012 at 11:56 pmThanks for the response, your post is actually more helpful than you realize.
I despise GoPro cameras and try to avoid working with them at all costs – hence my search. But my avoidance of them cause me not to be aware of lens hacks. I didn’t realize you could do that! So, that is actually very helpful to know.
Still, I hate how everything is auto with them and prefer Sony MC1s for that reason. Thanks for the response though.
EDIT: I just did some searching and haven’t found what I’m looking for. Do you have any sources for these additional lenses and modifications? Also, has there been a way to lock exposure that I am unaware of? Or any type of manual control?
