Tutorial recommendations
Hi there,
Can anybody recommend good video tutorials for cinematography? I’m hoping to find something along the lines of lynda.com’s more extensive and structured courses. I shoot primarily with a 7D, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In what field of study? There are plenty of tutorial dvds for lighting interviews and so on. Are you looking primarily for dslr operation or something else?

I would say, yeah, getting the most out of dslr shooting–including lighting strategies, lens selection–is primarily what I want to learn.
I just discovered today that Richard Harrington’s “From Still to Motion” comes with a 6-hour training on DVD, so that’s probably where I’ll start.
Anything else along those lines you can recommend? Either with a focus on dslr shooting or on lighting (ideally with a focus on digital)?

https://www.filmskills.com/ – My acquaintance teaches cinematography through them and I trust the fact he knows what he’s doing… and he a handful of Emmys to prove it. Covers camera and equipment, lighting technique, and so on.

It sounds crazy, but I don’t find any of the “still shooters turned filmmakers thanks to the dslr” very good in terms of cinematic quality. I wouldn’t waste a dime on anything by Harrington or that entire brood.
Take it as you will, but I have a feeling most people are better off learning more general information then information on a camera that it kind of a kludge to use.

Me, I’d opt for taking the hands-on course from the Global Cinematography Institute headed by Yuri Neyman ASC and Vilmos Zsigmond ASC. (Vilmos was voted by his peers as one of the ten most influential cinematographers in history. He won an Oscar® in ’77 for Close Encounters of the third kind and was nominated three other times for The Deer Hunter, The River and The Black Dahlia. In 1999 the ASC gave him their Lifetime Achievement Award.)
It’ll cost you a couple of grand to take the course but you’ll be learning from some of the most respected masters of the craft.
