scanning pictures and slides: which format?
Simple question. Hopefully simple answer. My project is a 1280×720 HD video. I have to scan a ton of photos and slides. Which file type to use? Jpeg, tiff, pct, etc? The images will be manipulated in AE: zoomed in, panned around, etc.

If you’re going to be zooming in on them, I would go with TIFF. It can be an uncompressed, lossless format versus JPEG which may have some noticeable quality loss when zoomed in on.

Yes, TIFF is a good choice … PSD is also a good choice if you might want to do any Photoshop work on the images … I sometimes do certain types of image effects in Photoshop to cut down on AE render times for things that don’t need to be animated.

Also, scan them at 72 dpi- in AE 72/150/300dpi all look the same. Depending on how much you want to zoom in on an image, you may want to scan them larger than 1280 on the width. As a “rule” 120% zoom is the max you can go without any visible quality loss.

That depends on the scanning method … scan at the DPI that gives you the width that Trevor mentioned, or bigger. It may be 72, maybe not.Once it’s scanned and digital, the DPI is irrelevant.
