Panasonic HPX300
I have the opportunity to purchase a Panasonic HPX300 for $7700 plus an $800 rebate and (2) 32g P2 cards. There are a lot of conflicting opinions about this camera, but the consensus among professionals is that it is pretty fantastic. Are there any cameras in the works that I should hold off for? Is this camera suitable for narrative filmmaking? Please tell me your opinions and experiences. Thanks so much!

It seems like an OK deal. You can pickup a clean HPX-500 (No Lens) for that. IMO there is a huge difference between 2/3 sensors and 1/3

Big difference between the chips are that 2/3″ will have somewhat shallower depth of field at a given aperture, will require different lenses, and 2/3″ generally will have better dynamic range and low light capability than 1/3″, all things being equal.
I’ve been looking into the HPX300 vs. HPX500 as well and it’s an interesting comparison.
The 300 has full raster 2.2 million pixel chips, while the 500 has 620,000 pixel chips; winner HPX300.
The 300 has CMOS chips while the 500 has CCD, which may be a significant for some; winner HPX500.
The 300 is 1/3″ while the 500 is 2/3″ with much larger pixels, winner HPX500.
The 300 shoots to AVC-I while the HPX500 is DVCPro; winner HPX300 depending on your needs.Either one sounds like it’d be a fine camera; maybe you should try them both out?
