The JVC model you list is PAL (not NTSC) camera — perhaps you are in Europe. It is discontinued, and has 1/3″ chips. A possible plus is it is shoulder mounted.

The EX-1 uses 1/2″ chips (bigger is almost always better), and is brand new. A larger version is the EX-3.

If your friend needs a bargain, perhaps he can find a used JVC. Otherwise, he probably will be better off with either the EX-1 or 3.

Be sure to check your FCP version compatibility if you’re working with EX. Only the newest version of FCP supports XDCAM and XDCAM EX.
