What dolly recommend? Ideas?

Anyone have a good fairly portable dolly to recommend for a Z1? Something that travels fairly easily and can set up some track for? I watched a docu on TLC the other day about the founding of Banff in Canada and nearly every beautiful outdoor shot the camera was dollying or tracking someone, and this had to be rugged terrain where they set it up. Also, what’s a good boom or crane for this camera? Thanks.

I’d like to read the dolly/boom rec’s too, but I’d like to the mix, what about the various new Steadicam-like devices for small cameras.

What is your budget for the dolly, and the boom.

It’s hard to say without knowing what the range is. I agree it could be good to have a board which discusses dollies, cranes, steadicams and various camera mounts. There are posts about this from time to time on various boards, someone recommending the CobraCrane (which I own) or some VariZoom product, but it’s the kind of topic which could have it’s own board, if enough people wanted to participate and Ron felt it merited it.

I just wonder what dolly is used by a small crew working in the Canadian Rockies where you’re carrying a lot up the side of a mountain to set up and get shots.

sounds like a stedicam would be difficult on that terrain.

We have a Losmandy Spider Dolly which is awesome and
fairly small compared to most dollies but it is by no means
portable.

You may want to look into using something home
made and very light. If you have someone at your disposal

Something simple like that may be what you need.
The biggest challenge would be making a flat run on uneven terrain.
You would have that problem with any dolly though.

For a portable jib try http://www.microdolly.com It is light and controls the head with cables, works very well
once you get the hang of it.
