I would be happy if anyone could give me some advise on 3D Video Integration Workflow. I am making a historic documentary. My aim is to integrate 3D models of buildings that were demolished in WW2 (made in MAYA) in HD video shot today. Is it wise to try obtaining the final compositing result from the MAYA (machmoving was made in Boujou) Where will after effect cut in. The truth is I am comfortable in AFX image controls and “ignorant” in Maya final rendering techniques. Any workflow suggestions? What applications do I need and in which order???
    HELP, THX!

    Hi Nikos –

Although this may not be the ideal workflow, what I generally do (I work with Max 2010, not Maya) is to create my 3D elements in Max, then export them as RPF files, which, with the right switches turned on at export time (you’ll have to check this in Maya), will allow you to send your camera move to After Effects. Go to Animation > Keyframe Assistant > RPF Camera Import in AE, and you’ll be all set.

I believe there is also a script for AE which will send the camera info to Maya. Here, I found it at:

If you’re more comfortable in AE, I would choose that workflow. Getting up to speed in high-end 3D packages can take years (I know – I’ve worked with Max for almost 10 years, and I’m barely fluent with most of its’ features). There is no one right workflow – use what gets the job done most efficiently for you. Good luck!

    Thanks a lot Joe!
The fact that there is no “right workflow” is both comforting and discomforting! To tell the truth I am in to cinematography and editing. The 3d part is dealt by my colleague how is sort of “maya guru” as far it concerns though game development application of MAYA not cinema applications. I will inform him about this RPF step and see how it will work via MAYA or MAX. Then I will import in AE and see what happens! I have never inserted 3d elements in AE, I will try and lets you know.
    Thanks again!
    Nikos
