I have some freelance editing work coming up soon and the job requires me to have Avid on my system. But when I tried to download the free trial, the program would not run due to my iMac’s RAM speed. So if I have to purchase an older version of Avid Media Composer, which version should I get that will work best? These are my iMac specs:

    iMac (27-inch, Late 2009)
Processor: 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB

I’m currently on OSX Yosemite (Version 10.10.4).

I wouldn’t say RAM SPEED…but amount of RAM. 4GB is too little. You need at least 8GB…I recommend 16GB. So that’s all you need to update. no need for a new machine.

Besides, with the OS version you are at, only the latest release of Avid MC is compatible. Older versions will not be.

Thank you Shane. My next question is how do I update my RAM?

To go Crucial.com and input your computer type, and it’ll indicate what RAM you need. Always get them in pairs, so get like 2x8GB sticks. You should have extra slots for this, so just add them to what you have. There are tutorials online (use google) on how to do this. Or, if you aren’t comfortable doing it, take it to an Apple store or other Apple retailer and have them do it.
