  • Simple question: jump forward/backward during playback

Posted by Benjamin Steiner on April 12, 2015 at 12:19 am

Can I use just the arrow keys for that, and can I choose the number of frames? I would like to jump 5 seconds forward/backward.

    Thanks

You can jump forward or backward by typing in +5.00 (or -5.00)

Thanks but the whole point is to use a quick key to do it, to browse the video rapidly… Not possible to assign this to a shortcut key?

I fear that this particular keyboard entry would stop playback. There’s only a very small set of keys that can be used during video playback like Mark IN, OUT, add a locator/marker, or using an external (supported) mixer for audio levels.

As far as combining function for more complex key combinations, most users turn to third party applications.

Thanks, third party applications like what? (I am on Windows for now but suggestions on both systems are welcome)

    Programs like this…

    Windows:
    https://www.wintask.com/keyboard-macro.php?gclid=CLKzzLnS88QCFSYV7AodWEIA5Q

    OS X:
    https://www.keyboardmaestro.com/main/

There may be others, but this was a quick search. Again, I feel this particular process will stop playback, but these apps can be useful for a bunch of other stuff. I have used them to help select “AutoSync and OK” as as simple example of an easy two steps into one.

Thanks, actually I already use AutoHotkey for other things but if I assign some
key combination to an arrow key it will mess up everything inside Avid, can’t use arrow keys when typing text etc… there is no way to define mor precise indigenous hotkeys?

There is an “add alt key” command in the command palette > Other, but it doesn’t do anything: can I assign eg Y to what Alt+Y does?

    Thanks.

It has been a long time request to have in-app stackable key functions, but that has never made it to the top of the priority list. For now, it is only what third party applications can do.
