  Video capture in media composer on a Mac

  I typically use Newscutter, but I need to use Media composer on a Mac for a shoot tomorrow. I need to record the output of a ipad-like device that has HDMI and VGA outputs. My question is how do I record that in media composer? Do I use a HDMI to Thunderbolt chord and then what capture settings do I need in media composer? Thanks!

  Do you have a capture device like Nitris DX, Mojo DX…or other third party options like BlackMagic Design, AJA or Matrox? You’ll need those. Without those, it’s not possible.

  Also…Avid can only capture video signals…like from a camera or deck. It cannot do a “screen capture” of what you do on the iPad. You need a SCAN CONVERTER for that.

  Thanks for the response. I believe that we have AJA on our systems. But I guess we’ll need to find a scan converter too. Do you know if the same rules apply to Premiere?

  And the rules apply to all editing software when it comes to capturing from an external source. There are screen capture software for computer screens, and then you can either edit those with the screen capture software (Screenflow, for example), or edit in an NLE (Adobe would be the only one that could edit those in a non-broadcast frame size, Avid only edits broadcast frame sizes…and now 2K and 4K. But screen captures don’t conform to those specs).

  But you said this iPad like device has HDMI outputs? That means that it most likely outputs a 1080 signal, to conform to TVs. YOu should be able to capture that signal….if your AJA has an HDMI input. If Avid won’t do it, AJA has capture software that should, and then you AMA link and transcode in Avid.
