A client provided me with footage shot at different 1080 frame rates.
    I created project at 1080 24p.

Some motion graphics work was provided in ProRes 29.97.
I set import to DnXHD 115, converting when importing.

Now the client says some of the animation provided
is going slightly out of sync with the provided music
in the timeline. This happens midway into the file,
    begins just fine.

Animation was originally created using same music
as a guide track. The ProRes file was in sync.

    What would account for this?|
Would re-importing and leaving file at original ProRes format
    make a difference?

I have never had a sync issue when importing, thoughts?

I frankly don’t see it, but of course want to make the client happy!

Make projects that match the frame rate of your footage. Import the footage into those projects, so the frame rate doesn’t change. Then take those bins into your 29.97 project. The frame rate conversion will happen there, and will be done properly (green dot on the clip in the timeline, and Avid adds/removes the proper pulldown).

When you imported the 29.97 into a 23.98, you converted the frame rate, and it won’t be a good conversion. Sync issues can arise.

OK, so a separate project for 24 material.
Two projects, one basically to set up proper conversion
    to a 29.97 timeline project.

Would the reverse also be the case, sep project
for 29.97 footage, bringing those bins into a 24p project?

29.97 to 23.976 gets frames dropped or blended in order to reduce the number of frames for each given second of footage.

    23.976 to 29.97 adds fields in a 29.97i (not p also called 1080i/59.94.

Yes. Always import into a project that matches the frame rate of the material, then copy the bins into the main project.

    Right,

So is one preferential over another?
I have both flavors to deal with
and would like to take path of least resistance
in terms of re-importing and setting up
    a new project.

What’s your final delivery spec? Primary and follow-ons?
