Grading for the Net Vs. Grading for Broadcast in Media Composer
Hi,
I have recently purchased an HP Dreamcolor Z24x, primarily for grading 422 material for the web. I hooked the monitor up to my macbook pro via a blackmagic mini monitor.
As a test, I edited some properly exposed Rec 709 footage into a YCbCR 709 sequence in Avid MC 7 and watched it on the Dreamcolor, in both the display’s Rec 709 and sRGB colour space modes.
In Rec 709 mode, the properly exposed footage looked extremely underexposed and flat, whereas in sRGB mode the footage looked properly exposed and much closer to what I saw on my laptop display.
When I’m grading for the web in Avid, should I be monitoring in sRGB mode on the Dreamcolor, even though I am in a rec 709 sequence in Avid?
The difference between the sRCG and Rec 709 modes is so great that I imagine separate grades would need to be done for broadcast and the web?

Are you sending true progressive RGB to Dreamcolor? That is the only way its color engine can properly display as Rec709. Usually this has to be done with an additional device. Allan Teper does a great job of keeping up on the Dreamcolor monitor and what is needed for it do what it needs it do. Here is his latest post as well as links to related blogs on the same topic.

The other issue, is even if “RGB” for web. most people do not have calibrated monitors on their system, so the same challenges exist there as well. Also, do not use Avid’s source/record GUI monitors as a guide.

I am sending true progressive, but apparently, from what I’ve read, this is no longer an issue with this current generation of Dreamcolor monitors that just came out. I believe it is also YUV video, but this apparently is not an issue with the current generation of Dreamcolor. TheZ24x and Z27x do not demand RGB 444 progressive the way the last model did. I read Allan Teper’s articles before purchasing to make sure I could use it with the blackmagic mini monitor (without the expensive Blackmagic band-aid device that converted everything to RGB).
To be honest, I’m not sure if the blackmagic mini monitor is feeding the Dreamcolor correctly, because the image appears blown up slightly and has slight aliasing jaggies on 1080p 5D footage.
I know that the Avid GUI monitors do brighten up the image considerably and are completely unreliable, but I thought that the fullscreen playback from Avid on the macbook pro, as well as the images from exported quicktimes, would be much closer to Rec 709 than I witnessed on the Dreamcolor.
