Transcoding AMA Canon footage to DNX36
Does anyone have a chart or know how long it takes to transcode from Canon HD footage to DNX36? My producer’s going to have around 150 hours and we’re trying to guestimate how many hours that is going to take someone to get through.

There are a lot of variables, so I don’t think a chart would really be feasible,
Version of MC, number of CPU cores, CPU speed, disk speed. GPU is irrelevant.
The most recent versions of MC will utilize CPU cores more effectively in transcoding. Using slower disk interfaces, like FW800 or USB2 will cause a bottleneck.

What file format does the camera save the video as? I believe starting with MC6 or 7 Avid supports MXF media from Canon’s cameras natively so there is no transcode need. You should be able to AMA link to the files then consolidate them onto your Avid media drive. The ‘ingest’ time is basically just how long it takes Avid to do a file copy of the media from its source onto your editing drive.

Thanks everyone for responding, I’ve gone back to the producer to find out the file formats that the cameras are generating. They’re using 4 different cameras, so I’m going to guess that there’ll be a range of formats too. I know one camera is a Canon 300, and I think that’s generating MXF files, so probably the easiest to transcode, MXF being something Avid MC is designed to work with. Anyway, big thanks for your replies so far.

I AMA link to C300 ftg all the time. I usually subclip what I want and then transcode that. AMA transcode is faster then the traditional import.
