60fps to 24fps (overcrank)
Posted by Daniel Schultz on April 15, 2013 at 4:05 pmA couple questions for an old FCP editor:
1. I shot some footage at 720/60p and want to slow it down for a 23.97 timeline. What’s the best way? (I’m used to conforming in Film Tools in FCP).
2. I shot separate sound for a piece I’m working on. What’s the best way to link the sound clips to the video-with-camera-audio clips? Is “WAV” a good format, or do I need to change it?
Thanks very much in advance!

April 15, 2013 at 4:44 pmHi,
Avid will compensate by default on import/ama to match your project. If you want slow-mo you’d need to promote the motion adapter applied to effects otherwise your sequence would look as if it was 24p.
You can Also import the clips in
A 60 Project, them import the bin
Of those in a 24 project.Audio: what about bwf ?

April 15, 2013 at 5:24 pmThe exact steps are
Import into a 720p60 project. CLose that project. Make a 1080p 23.98 project, or open one you already made…copy the bin into that project on the finder level, or open the bin and drag the clips into a new bin in that current project.
Add to the timeline. Note the green dot.
Open the Motion Effect Editor while parked on that clip. Either map it to a timeline slot, or to they keyboard…I have mine on the keyboard.
When you open that interface, hit the PROMOTE BUTTON.
Click on the running guy…that’s the SPEED GRAPH. You’ll note that the speed percentage is something like 225%. Drop that to 100%.
Notice the nice smooth slow motion clip.

April 15, 2013 at 6:38 pmOR:
– Open the console (CTRL-6 / CMD-6)
– Type “IgnoreQTRate True”
– Import your source file through File->Import(Type “IgnoreQTRate False” to reset)
OR
– Open the console (CTRL-6 / CMD-6)
– Type “SetAMAQTForcedFrameRate true 23.976” (or any other frame rate)
– AMA-link to the files you want to have slowed down
– (optional: transcode your source clips)(Type “SetAMAQTForcedFrameRate False 0” to reset)

April 15, 2013 at 10:32 pmNot sure the console command works with audio.
The open poster Dan said that he wanted to take advantage of the camera audio recorded for sync.Fred.

April 15, 2013 at 10:33 pmWell…don’t slow the footage down if you want sync. Just import it from the other project and cut at normal speed.
If you want super slow motion…do it the way we suggest. Audio will not sync, because the speed of the footage has changed.

April 15, 2013 at 10:38 pmExactly Shane,
But what I mean about the console command and audio is that (at least that’s the way I’ve been taught but as I never tried personaly this workflow I can not affirm 100%) the audio of the clip has to be removed to go the console route, previously to import.
The steps would then be:
– remove audio before import
– ignoreqtrate step
– import stepCan someone confirm or infirm this?
Fred.

April 16, 2013 at 9:08 amUsed to be that IgnoreQTRate needed the source clip to not have any audio. Starting v6, that appears to have changed. It will not affect the sound, so the sound will be too short, and run at normal speed, and you will get a warning about this.
For ForceQTFrameRate your clips can have sound, but the sound remains unaffected (so will go out of sync).

February 4, 2014 at 12:55 amHello there
Can i have an additional pointer re Job’s advice anyone? (i’m trying this with C300 clips in MC7.03 – some are 1080p 23.976fps, and some 720p 60fps)Jobs advice:
“Open the console (CTRL-6 / CMD-6)
– Type “SetAMAQTForcedFrameRate true 23.976″ (or any other frame rate)
– AMA-link to the files you want to have slowed down
– (optional: transcode your source clips)”Question:
Can i do the console command *after* i have AMA linked to all my C300 clips but before I transcode?? Some of my clips are 60fps.
I intend to transcode as I can’t do QT exports with the consolidated media (i thought turning it into .mxf media would fix this but i get the long GOP error)
Also can i safely transcode multiple bins in one shot??Thanks very much!
