  • Where should I save my files?

I’ve been using AE for 3 years now and I only now discovered that I should be saving my source and footage files on a second drive (not the drive the app is running on).

Now I’m a little confused. I thought that I had read (back when I was first learning) that I should keep my Project Files and Footage on the main drive, in my case Macintosh HD and set my Disc Cache to a second drive.

Should I move all of my projects (project files, sources files, etc.) to my second drive?

Should I move “only” my footage files to my second drive and keep my Project Files with the app on MacHD?

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thank you. I’m going to stop everything and do that right now.

may I know what harm will be on the system drive to have projects and source files working on?

After Effects will work slower because it needs to access the same hard drive for too many things. The computer will need to access the application on the main hard drive. So if the project and source files are on the same drive then too many things need to fit through “the pipes.”
