Best setup for a beginning editor and avid user???
Hello Everyone,
I am just starting out in the first editing class at my film school. I am giving my computer a bit of an overhaul as I cannot shell out the 1000+ needed for a new i7 machine. my specs are as follows
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 overclocked to 3.6ghz
8gb ram
ati 4850 video card
1 x 500gb 7200rpm as main operating system drive
2x 1tb 7200rpm hard drives.My question now………
At school, we use avid on the dual xenon processor mac pro’s. the mac pro’s have one drive inside for operating system and a shared media drive on campus where all our avid teaching stuff is.
should I:
A: use 500gb for OS and Avid, Use 1tb for media and the other for backup?
B: use 500gb for OS and avid, use 2x1tb in raid0.
C: Other suggestion you may have

What kind of media and data rates are you expecting? Drive performance will affect resolution and number of streams being played. I would probably go RAID 0 and use that for media and backup as needed.

I will be editing SD footage from school and HD footage that I will occasionally shoot with a DSLR. So,I feel the CPU will be half decent for editing HD, at least for learning.

I think CPU will be fine. It’s more a matter of disk speed and sustain rates for high data rate formats off the media drive. You can run Blackmagic or other similar Disk speed tests to check that out.
