Converting 1080i50 to 1080i59.94
Hi All,
I have just finish a Series in Pal 1080i50 (Exported QT DNxHD185) and I have to deliver in NTSC as well.By the way, I’m on Symphony 6 and Nitris DX.
Below the process so far:
1-I have created a 1080i59.94 Project opened the Masters Bin from the 1080i50 Project and modified the sequence rate.
2-I noticed if I promoted the conversion effect to blended vtr, I had a better outcome. Fluid Motion is not an option due to time factors.
3-I have mixed down to DNxHD220 vision and audio mixed down to 29.97 frame rate from 25.
4-I have multiply mix minus tracks for international feeds. Do I need to convert all to 29.97?
5-Drop Frame puts me out by a few frames but will anyone care
That is it, have I missed anything for the NTSC world.

I’m all still live in the Avid, but have also Export the PAL Masters to QT wrapper DNxHD185.

If you were outputting to tape, this would be a breeze. YOu have Symphony and Nitris…so universal mastering. BUT…Universal mastering only happens when you output via the Nitris…not if you export a digital file. Now it gets tricky. And I don’t know the answer to that, I just wanted to ask a probing question.
If I were in your boots, I’d rent an AJA KiPro or KiPro Mini and output to that device, as it records DNxHD QT files. So you could universal master out via the Nitris (From the PAL timeline) and record the NTSC QT file. I’ve done this a few times for a variety of NLEs.

Thanks for the probing question. We don’t have a NTSC record deck. Deinterlacing first gives the best final. But render time is huge.
But I do have 2x Nitris DX Symphonies, I could record from one to the other, but it seems a bit funny, for a work around.

This wouldn’t be so much the Universal Mastering feature than it is “mix & match.” Universal Mastering is for 23.976p, 24p/25p timelines to 24p, 25p, and 29.97i, and 50i. It does so by first slowing up, speeding up by .1% or 4.1% then deal with the progressive to interlace. Audio is adjusted through a sample rate conversion. This created a higher quality conversion because it does a frame for frame first. But it does change the duration of the program.
Mix and Match preserves original duration, but does so with motion adapters of which the default is considered the best quality for real time performance. Audio is untouched regardless of frame rate – only video is adjusted.
Shane’s suggestion of going to an external recorder is a good one, keeps the real time aspect for file based delivery.

If time is a priority and you can afford it, get a Teranex 2D and be done with your worries. Price has come down significantly on this and you can get one for around $2K USD (no idea in other countries). Hardware conversion going this way looks good. I’ve done 1080 / 50i to 1080 / 59.94i conversions on national spots using this box and everything went fine. It’s worth considering, and one real use like this could easily pay for it and then you have this ultra flexible tool in your arsenal. For me, it was just worth it to save the headaches.
