    Hi,

Im new to this, so please bear with me. This may be a really silly question but what is the purpose of a reference in video editing terms. Where i am we have 6 avid suites and have a house reference but just wanted a quick rundown of what it is.

    Thanks

Reference is used…needed…when outputting to tape. You need to send a reference signal…also called house sync…to the edit system and the deck. This makes sure that both system and deck are on the same page, electronically.

You don’t need to worry about this for general editing. It’s only for output to tape

and of course it’s needed if you want to do seamless swithing on mixers without a frame store (that you don’t want as it introduces at least a frame of delay)

But that probably won’t happen in the OP’s shop…
