  Symphony 6.0 with Kona 3 card

  Thinking about taking advantage of the Symphony upgrade pricing. There are some pretty good deals for both the software only and with the Nitris Hardware. I currently have a couple of Kona 3 system running Smoke and Final Cut, a couple of questions:

  – other than the universal mastering are any other features missing when using the Kona3? I know it can’t do stereo 3D, we already use smoke for that so it’s not an issue.

  – has anyone using the Software only version with Kona had any noticeable performance issues when Color Correcting or doing basic fx?

  – can the Nitris hardware co-exist on a mac that has the Kona 3?

  The main reason to get an Avid is to broaden our freelance editor pool, I just want to make sure we have something that works well.

  I am fairly certain the Kona card can co-exist with the Nitris DX if you have the slots available. It is not Avid supported, but I saw discussion of this on Avid’s support forums for another card. Apparently Avid will favour the Avid hardware and ignore the third party if both are present. Look here – https://community.avid.com/forums/t/107841.aspx

  Perhaps a cousin to this thread —
  is there a trick to getting Symphony to recognize an external RS422 edit deck (SRW-5500 or DVW-A500) through a Blackmagic Decklink (Extreme3d)? I’ve walked thorough the deck config, and although Symphony recognizes the Decklink, it doesn’t seem to know there’s an HDcam deck out there… Yes its plugged in.

  I’ve just been researching this myself. It seems you can’t output closed captioning through a Kona from Avid, you need the Nitris for this. We output all our shows from FCP 7 through Kona 3s to HDcam with captioning. The lack of captioning support is a concern for us.
