Does MC 6 require the 64 bit kernel on Mac OSX LIon?
Posted by John Pale on November 11, 2011 at 5:38 pmI know from the page on the Avid website that the early Mac Pro’s that are EFI limited to the 32bit kernel are unsupported, but does this mean MC 6 will not even install on those machines?
I have a Mac Pro 2,1. 8 core (2 x 3.0 Quad Core). It runs Adobe CS 5.5 and FCP X in 64 bit and it screams. Far from ready for retirement.
(MacOSX can run 64 bit apps addressing all my 32 GB of ram, with all 64 bit goodness without the 64 bit kernel.)

November 11, 2011 at 5:57 pmGood question. I guess we need someone with one of those machines to answer that. Or Avid.
Try posting that on their forums too. Avid reps always hang out in those forums…

November 11, 2011 at 6:20 pmOddly enough, I may end up trying MC 6 in Boot Camp using Windows 7 on that machine…since it runs “full” 64 bit

November 11, 2011 at 7:12 pmI have a similar question. Looking at Avid’s specs for MC 6 they list the “Harpertown” Mac Pros as qualified, but only the 3.2 or 3.0 GHz versions. I have several of the “early 2008” 2.8 GHz versions. Is this just that Avid didn’t qualify my systems or is it that they flat out can’t run MC 6?

November 11, 2011 at 8:05 pmI think the early 2008 is the 3,1 which can boot using the 64 bit kernel.
This is my machine

Certainly not a slow poke.

That is one of the systems listed in the Avid list of qualified computers. Mine has a lower clock speed and I don’t know if that is a deal killer.

November 12, 2011 at 1:56 amPurely speculation of course, but I suspect it will run on the earlier machines, Avid just didn’t test them. There’s already information out there that MC6 will run on 10.6.8, which also isn’t ‘supported.’

November 12, 2011 at 5:18 amSaw this on the Avid forum (thanks for the tip, Shane)..

A guy who apparently was a Beta tester had it working on a Mac Pro 1,1, which cannot boot the 64 bit kernel.
That bodes well. He said it did not work well with intensive operations, but his system was way under powered in the RAM dept. for a 64 bit app.
