I’m considering the FCP cross grade to MC. I was wondering if I can XML a sequence to Apple Color?

No, but you can send an EDL, which is a little more basic but does the trick.

    Thanks Andrew

Single or multi-layer on the edl import? Do dissolves make it over?

How do you get the Avid export into Color? Color doesn’t do DNxHD. Only FCP codecs.

Transcoding all your media to ProRes and linking to it with AMA is one way if you have MC5 or above.

What about if I am editing XDCAMHD in MC natively using AMA? Wouldn’t the XML from MC point Color to the XD files?

A correction to my earlier post. Replace XML with EDL. 🙂

A few issues with that idea.

#1 – Editing with footage accessed via AMA is cumbersome. It might work for short durations, but nothing really long. It is designed to allow ACCESS to the footage. Not really for fully blown editing, no matter what Avid Marketting says. I have tried it, and it didn’t work well

#2 – Avid doesn’t export/import XML. OMF, AAF, EDL only. And Color only works with XML and EDL…so you have to use EDLs.

#3 – Color doesn’t work with XDCAM native files. If they were converted to QT say like in FCP, then it will. But not the native way it was shot.

[Lee Warner] “A correction to my earlier post. Replace XML with EDL. :-)”

    Ah, missed that.

The EDL method only works if you export a single QT file. The EDL then chops it up in Color. You cannot have the EDL point to the media and use the raw media, like an XML. That’s not how it works.

And Avid cannot export a reference QT with footage accessed via AMA. You have to transode the footage to DNxHD first, then you can. But Color doesn’t work with DNxHD…nor will it, since it is EOL. You then need to transcode that file AGAIN to ProRes. The use Color…and then render out. But then you need to output it with FCP, or a capture card’s output app. Can’t then take that back into Avid to output.

Hmmm…or can you? AMA the file. I wonder if you can do a digital cut with an AMA file…

    Shane,

Thanks for that info. I’ve got FCP7, PPro 5 and hopefully soon MC on my MacPro. For quick grading I’ll use Magic Bullet Colorista II and Looks in FCP or AE. I’ll use Color for anything more extensive. I am trying to figure out my workflow for doing grading with MC. Two problems I have is that both Color and Magic Bullet don’t work with MC and my MX02 currently won’t output a SDI signal from MC to my FSI monitor. I really don’t want to buy a mini for output. I have been hearing rumors that MC6 may play better with the MX02.

Any thoughts? Resolve seems to work with MC edls. Maybe I’ll save up my pennies before Canada EOLs that form of currency.
