Lately there has been some confusion at work. We have material that was shot on a Canon 5D, transcoded to ProRess 422 (by the film maker, this is how we got it) linked AMA in Avid and then transcoded to DNX145. The confusion is to whether it is ok or not to rename these clips once they have been transcoded withing Avid. The original clips are a series of numbers. If we rename the clips with a more descriptive name, will it break the link between it and the master file? We will be doing an offsite online with this project.

Rename to your hearts content. Avid knows what file links to what media. The actual media that Avid transcoded to doesn’t have the original name either…it is a very long series of letters and numbers. And Avid tracks this with an extensive database. So you can rename all you want, and you can still relink via AMA, or whatever.
