I’m editing a super 16mm project. Since the footage has a 1,66 aspect ratio, I need to apply a 16/9 mask. I’m trying to apply a mask under effects–>film–> mask, but I’m having problems to judge the right amout of scaling. Do enyone knows the right amount of scaling I must apply? I tried wide 92 and height 89, but I have no clues if it’s right.
    Thanks!

How was the image transferred? To SD or HD? If SD, was it transferred as anamorphic 16×9?

Your assumption that a 1.66:1 film needs a 16×9 mask is incorrect, as 16×9 equals 1.78:1 not 1.66:1. In the effects palette, under Film, you should find a 1.66:1 mask. This mask only works correctly in 4×3 SD projects, though.

One more thing: as the AR for Super 16mm is already 1.66:1, it would normally either have been transferred to 4×3 video with a small letterbox, or to 16×9 SD or HD, eseentially changing the AR to 1.78:1. In either case, you should not need to mask anything.

    thanks.
The footage was transferred in HD. the 1.66 mask only applyes a mask on top and bootom of the frame. But I need to apply a mask also left and right to achieve the right aspect ratio.

I don’t think that will work.
If the footage has not been transferred with pillarboxing (black bars left and right), then it has been cropped to 16×9 (1.178:1). If you crop the sides now as well, you end up with a zoomed-in version of the original 1.66:1 Aspect Ratio.

If you want to know where 1.66:1 lives, go to Belle-Buit.com and download their HD test chart. It has marker lines for 1.66-within-HD.
