AVC-Intra codec trouble
Hi, I’m running windows 7 pro on an HP Z400 with MC 5.0.3 and quicktime 7.6.6 and I can’t seem to get the AVC-Intra quicktime codec working. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling once with no luck. Quicktime and the codec install fine but when I try to open an AVC-Intra quicktime all I get is a white screen. I have another computer running XP SP3 with MC 5.0.3 as well and it’s able to export quicktimes and refs no problem, the only difference that I can tell being the version of windows it’s running. Any ideas? Thanks for the help…

Can you open the file at the OS level?
Is this from a P2 Camera? I presume this is a camera original, so is it in the original file hierarchy / folder structure?
Also, are you trying to link via AMA or Import?

I haven’t tried to read any P2 files from a camera on this system yet. What I’m working with is P2 footage that was imported by the other MC onto an editshare. The project and all the AVC-Intra media show up and play on both systems no problem. It’s just that on this one computer the avc-intra quicktime codec doesn’t seem to install correctly no matter what I try. If I make a ref from a sequence that has mixed media such as DnxHD and AVC-Intra, the ref will open in quicktime and start to play, but as soon as it hits an AVC-Intra shot it will go to white and give me a missing codec error. I’m mainly concerned about making quicktime refs from MC so that I can bring them into Sorenson Squeeze.

Will RAW AVC-Intra play at the OS level, inside an AVC-Intra player? Not a QT Ref.
Is your Quicktime version the same on all machines?
If you export out of Avid JUST a qt ref of AVC-Intra, does that work…OR does the white frame and error only happen with a mixed coded qt ref?
Have you tried various uninstall applications to rid your system of the AVC-Intra codec, then rebooted and re-stalled the codec?

I just got a message back from Avid support. If I understand them correctly MC will only export and read quicktime AVC-Intra with a Nitris DX:
“AVC-Intra only supported with Nitris Dx and that is the main reason for which under the system with Mojo SDI the export fails. ”
I also noticed that when I open up those AVC-Intra quicktimes I exported, the codec is listed as Avid AVC-I, which would support the idea that the MC with Nitris has its own flavor of AVC-Intra codec. And from Avid’s AVC-I Codec Module FAQ:
Will Media Composer Nitris DX include the AVC-Intra encoder?
Composer will ship only with the NitrisDX Codec, but can get the AVC-Intra module as option. Symphony systems will ship with the AVC-Intra included. -
Well, that poses more questions:
The AVC-Intra codec board was introduced for the Nitris DX in MC 5.5. This allowed for capture, but more importantly, Real Time playback of AVC-Intra via AMA…and it should not effect IMPORTING of an AVC-intra file. (Someone please correct me if I’m wrong) Remember, importing converts the file to whatever Avid codec you choose.
Are you importing or trying to edit with the raw file (AMA)?
So I don’t believe this Nitris issues applies to use, since I do not believe 5.0.3 (what version are you at? 5.0.3.8?) supported AVC-Intra.
What’s different on this machine than the others?

Hmm, well this one is running windows 7 with a Mojo SDI, the other is Windows XP SP3 with a Nitris DX, otherwise exact same CPUs, MC version, and quicktime version. The files that I’m working with were originally AVC-Intra on a P2, imported into MC set for AVC-Intra in the media creation settings. We are not using AMA or working with the original P2 files. I have tried twice to uninstall and reinstall quicktime and the AVC-Intra codec from Panasonic with the regular windows uninstaller. Quicktimes and refs go white with both mixed media and just AVC-Intra exported files. Thanks for brainstorming so far…
