  • Exporting for 16:9 project

Posted by John Neer on March 14, 2011 at 4:08 am

I am now shooting in 16:9 format..at last- when I export a project using QT reference and mark the appropriate box for an 16:9 export project and burn the dvd, when shown on tv it still appears to be 4:3. I know tv’s have various formats for watching and I use widescreen to watch. No luck seeing it as 16:9.

When I begin a new project and set the preferences up I chose 30i no others such as 720p or whatever. I shot in SD and the camera settings are for 16:9. I am stumped for sure on this one.

    Hello,
Maybe your problem it’s in your dvd authoring program. Check aspect ratio from your project or movie.

The 16:9 or 4:3 check box in the QT export is only for QT player, not a flag for MPEG2 encoders. That needs to be set manually in the encoders parameters to allow it to put the 16:9 flag into the resulting file. If coming from standard def into Sorenson, you need to deselect “maintain aspect ratio” and set an x and y that is 16:9.

    Hey Michael,

Thanks for your response. I still don’t get it. Ok, from the timeline do I need to export the project via QT and then import that QT file into Sorenson? Am I to set the encoders manualy in the QT export settings..if so I fail to find the “maintain aspect ratio” deselect button…also where is the x and y settings you refer to located..in Sorenson Squeeze? So, if I do the above..QT to Sorenson then do I use Avid DVD program to burn the dvd using the Sorenson file as the media to import to Avid DVD?

I know I am a pain man…but I really need to figure this out..I really do appreciate your help…a lot!!!

When using Sorenson Squeeze for example, click “advance” settings and play around with the settings as you see in the frame grab here:

Things that will change is whether your source is progressive, frame rate, if interlace – field ordering, etc.
