I’ve had the Avid DVD by Sonic authoring program for awhile. It came bundled with MC4. I just never used it… and now I need it.

I’ve started learning how it works and I’m trying to author a very simple DVD… first play, no menu that will loop.

I’m encountering a bug that perhaps is a known bug, or maybe I need to get around it somehow.

When I want to “add a movie” The program shuts down with a crash (PC) message. I can always reopen and work with the tools, but it will not accept a movie for some reason.

    Any thoughts or recommendations?

    David,

What file type are you trying to import (add)? If it has already been encoded, do you know what program and codec was used? Can you import (add) a QT reference file, .mov or other non-encoded file for Avid DVD to work with?

    Hi Joe,

    Thanks for responding.

What I did was take an HD project shot at 720 with 50fps (PAL project) and export the file as a QT movie using the native DNxHD 10 bit codec with which I edited the program. I’m using a test clip of about 15 sec. to see how things work (final movie is actually 10 minutes).

I used a format of 1920 X1080, which may have been a mistake, someone recommended I just use 720X576 with a 16:9 ratio. Don’t know if that’s the problem or not, but in another project which I tried to author a DVD a month or so ago, it was SD (DV clips and stills)video in 4:3 DV Stream format… which also kept crashing on import. I ended up availing upon a colleague to create the MPEG 2 DVD I needed.

Since it seems to be crashing as soon as I try to bring in the media assests (video and audio combined)

Great to do a 15-second test…can’t tell you how many times people try to work with a two hour clip without knowing if the settings will work…

First, I would try the SD resolution you mentioned. Next, do you have Sorenson that shipped with Avid? You should try letting Sorenson make the MPEG-2 and see if Avid DVD can work with that.

    Hi Joe-

Yes, I learned the hard way a few times before realizing that tests are the best way to insure something is “right” for whatever the real process may be.

    I did what you suggested and it worked perfectly. Mind you I have a lot to learn about properly authoring a DVD… gotta take the time to read the manual and sit with the program… but for these types of “approval” DVDs, your way seems to be right on… Avid even has the built in mechanisms- if we only would look for them {:>}

I ended up exporting a QT reference to my hard drive, then using Sorensen Squeeze and the right parameter to create the formatted video and then AVID DVD by Sonic to create the proper DVD… one thing I had to remember was to add the sound file as well… it is created separately.

Thanks for your assistance and knowledge.

Here’s a download that I was asked by tech support to install when I described similar issues with crashes.

    https://kb.roxio.com/search.aspx?URL=/content/000070GN&PARAMS=set-locale=en

It worked for me. Good luck.

    Glad to hear it, Lori.

I wish there were some new DVD authoring solutions out there…but I guess DVD’s time has come and gone…

I’ve been having the same problem, Add movie, instant error window, click close restart, spent two days hunting forums, firmware updates re-installing un-installing re-exporting.
    Nothing worked.
Then I discovered ignoring the problem worked well.
    Seriously!!
When the error window poped up in my annoyance I moved it away, in a mad clicking frenzy and realised Sonic still worked, dared myself to attempt a burn, with imediate success, yes I still had the error box but it burnt the disc perfectly.
Obviously there is still a problem of big error box hovering in my eyeline and obviously I still want to drop kick the thing but it worked so this may help others with deadlines as a temporary solution.

Joe – I’ve had to re-install all my Media composer stuff recently – and I just installed Avid DVD by Sonic – and I’m getting the message that it can’t find the security dongle and to make sure the drivers are installed correctly. I’ve moved the dongle in my tower… I’ve un-installed and re-installed the disk several times (restarting the computer) and nothing is working. I keep getting the same warning… and the program won’t launch. Any suggestions for help – I’ve of course got to get a dvd out!
