Logging & Organizing Advice
Hi,
I’m relatively new to Avid and am cutting a documentary. I’m trying to figure out the best way to organize my material, which has already been captured. I haven’t seen it yet, but I know much of it will be interviews, so I’ll want to be able to identify specific lines, etc.
I’m used to Final Cut Pro, where I relied on color labeling and markers, which were visible all at once in the browser window.
What is the best way to log clips? Should I mostly subclip or does that get overwhelming? Is there an effective way to use locators? Should I focus on comments and custom columns?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

DO you have transcripts of the interviews? If so, it would be ScriptSync all the way for me!

Hey Leslie,
You could continue with the colored clips and markers concept from fcp. Click on the clip and go edit>clip color to set the color that you could sift the bins by. Also within the clip, add markers and double click to type in whatever you need to each marker’s comments on the fly. Sub clips arranged in bins by topic or creating sequences of selects by topic could help too. Good luck.Editor / Motion Graphics Artist

Thanks for your suggestions. I didn’t realize that markers existed in Avid; how do I use them?

I am not in front of an Avid right now so I cant give you a play by play, but the way I used them was by mapping the “add marker” to my keyboard. They can be added to the timeline of a sequence or to a clip in the viewer. Once added, a quick double click will give you the ability to change marker color and add comments to the marker that can be viewed once you scrub over them. I always found them useful for writing those ideas that you never seem to remember if you don’t write them down that moment.

Thanks, Glen. Just so I know what to look for – is it different than a locator? I didn’t see anything that said Add Marker but perhaps I’m not looking in the right place.

If you use locators (you can chose the colour aswell) don’t forget to open the Locator Window. You can then see all locators of the active clip or sequence, very handy. Can also be printed or exported.
