    Hi everyone,

I have a problem I’ve never encountered before concerning importing red material in media composer.
    My workflow is:

Going to redrushes to get the medium files, taking the extensions off and make the medium wrappers.
Export an ale and import the ale in media composer. Then import the material via batch import.
(I just have to do the offline, so this quality is good enough for me)

This workflow has always worked before and I’ve been using it for more then a year now.

Now all of a sudden on my latest project I import and more then half of the clips are black. So NOT media offline but just black. But when I look at the the original medium quicktimes files in quicktime they’re fine.
Now.. when I restart media composer and import a file that before resulted in black video it imports fine!
But then when I select all of them and batch some of ‘m will be black again. It seems random.

Has anyone else encountered this problem and came up with a solution?
I would be so greatfull if you would share it with me.
    I’m running out of time…..

    greetings, Martin

Anything change in the QT component, R3D files, new color science, etc.?

    Not that I know off..
it’s very strange and has not yet been resolved.
I tried it on antoher machine aswell, one that has leopard instead of snowleapard and mc 3 instead of mc 4 and it gave exactly the same result. Which leads me to think that the problem is in the redfiles.
Maybe it’s because of a camera firmware update or something.

Very interresting to see what will happen on my next job with red.

We started having the same problem in our last 4 RED shootings. It seems completely random. We haven’t had that problem for a while, but since the new Mysterium Camera came out, it’s a RED nightmare! AGAIN!

We are using the Automatic Duck workflow here, which is similar to the MetaCheater one. When we import the AAF (or ALE with MetaCheater), we have all our master clips with the necessary metadata. When we batch import the hell outta thos clips, 1 of 3 clips is all black. And as you said, Martin, when I restart Avid and try importing the same clips again, some of them will work, some of them won’t.

So I am lead to believe that the RAW clips are problematic. Funny thing though, we’ve had problems with corrupted files, not so long ago. We asked the data wrangler to check the files and said everything was ok on his side… Then, when the project went for its online session, the studio called us in panic saying that one of the shots they needed was corrupted and not even RedRocket could solve it. Keep in mind that I am speaking of two completely different RAW files. We checked on our backup disk… and the file was 100% fine. We sent them the file, finished the project, So from one backup to another, different files were corrupted on different backup disks…. Talk about stability! So if you have some trouble with one clip, try transfering it to another drive and it might just work!

I hate RED with a passion. The only company that releases its product without testing or providing software to properly work with their products. Bravo.

I have to say that since then, the problem never occured anymore. Now I’m using the ama-transcode method, which is a lot faster ( 2 x realtime when you go for quarter quality in hd) compared to the original import method…
Maybe you should try Andre, see what happens at your end.

    greetings Martin
