Recently, we unearthed a Mac OS 9 computer with a bunch of old QuickTime video files on it — rendered out of After Effects using (I believe) one of the Avid Meridian codecs for use in our now retired Mac OS 9 Media Composer systems. I can’t get them to play on OS X.

I’ve downloaded all the Avid codec packs I can find for QuickTime (Mac), have tried Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard machines (both QuickTime 7 and QuickTime X), and have had no luck. The only real information I have on exactly which codec was used comes from the QuickTime 7 movie inspector, and says, “Format: Media Composer, 720 X 486, Millions.” QuickTime X refuses to even open the files.

I have other Avid QuickTime files from around 2002 (originating from Mac OS X 10.0) that do play correctly (after installing the Avid codecs), but the QuickTime inspector for those says “Avid Meridien 3:1 NTSC 601, 720 x 486, Millions” and I’m pretty sure they’re using the AvidAVDJCodec.component for QuickTime. I believe the files that won’t play were made earlier than 2002, and definitely originate from Mac OS 9.

I know this isn’t a lot of information, but I’m wondering if anyone has run into old OS 9 QuickTime files for Avid that wouldn’t play and found a way to resolve it? I’m assuming there’s one old Avid codec for QuickTime that I need and don’t have. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Can you play them back in VLC?

Now why didn’t I think of that? They DO playback in VLC! Thank you!

I could probably convert everything with FFMPEG to DV, couldn’t I? Any other suggestions for batch conversions — the normal (QuickTime dependent) packages like Episode and Compressor don’t recognize the files.

    Thanks again for the help!

Avid never releases Quicktime codecs for ABVB in OSX, unfortunately.
