The Avid hates IE8 and Itunes
Now this is more of a statement than really a question. I work on Avid Media Composer 2.8.1 and on an XP 32-bit. And I recently went to a demo of Media Composer 4 and I had this statement.
When I started up Avid one day after windows did an update I found that Avid would not start up. Long story short I found that Avid Media Composer disputed with Internet Explorer 8 over an audio driver, causing Avid not to start up. (I fixed the problem by uninstalling IE 8)
I told the rep from Avid about it and he told me that I was absolutely right. Avid does not like IE 8 and Itunes. And he went on to tell me that one man’s itunes crippled one edit’s house network of Avid editors.
When the problem hit me I scoured the forums here and in Avid and found absolutely nothing about it.
I just find it weird that no one had this problem, but the Avid rep knew all about it.

Yeah, it’s a really, really, really good idea to turn off Windows updates and all other updates any programs on your system may do. That means no Quicktime update, no Adobe, no graphics cards, no Windows, no iTunes…nothing. It always runs the risk of breaking your Avid.

Yeah according to when that article was posted, that is about the time I ran into the issue, June 2009. I just bring it up now because I recently talked to the Avid rep.
At the time when I was having the problem. I searched long and hard for info and found nothing. Maybe I was looking in the wrong way.

Most known issues are on the Avid KB. It’s actually locating it that is the hard part.

iTunes requires Quicktime to function. As Apple is always updating the program, it usually requires the latest version of QT, which is at odds with Avid’s required version of QT which is usually a few updates behind.

Just a side note too… iTunes has it’s own auto-updater, so even if you switch automatic software updates off at a system level, iTunes will still do it’s own updating. You’ll need to go into the iTunes preferences panel and disable it. Sneaky little bugger it is.
