  Audio Suite Limiter is gone…

  I just had my Avid Symphony Nitris upgraded from 3.5.4 to 4.something. Now my audio suite limiter is gone. LAME! I used to put it on my full mix channels before outputting to tape as a final audio blanket. The levels I used were as follows:

  Gain: +4 db
  Threshold: -31db
  Attack: 1.0ms
  Release: 20ms

  Is there an audio suite tool that I can use as a replacement? Is there an experienced finish editor out there who can tell me good levels for an equivalent effect? Is limiter really gone, or did my tech guy not install something? Why would Avid put something like “bombastic” in the new audio suite with that stupid knob turning interface rather than being able to type in desired levels? “Upgrade”…I do no think that word means what you think it means.

  Find the EQII.dpm and DynamicsII.dpm from an old system or a friend, they might even reside in a subfolder named “Plugins (Unused)”. Those packages contain the “old” versions of the AudioSuite plugins, which for some reason were left out of the newer versions of the software (ruining compatibility with older sequences). The new versions are EQIII.dpm and DynamicsIII.dpm.

  They should live here:

  Win:
  C:\Program Files\Common Files\Digidesign\DAE\Plug-Ins\

  Mac:
  [boot volume]/Library/Application Support/Digidesign/Plug-Ins/

  You need not remove the newer ones to install the older ones.

  You can use compressor the same way or normalize it using the reverse thinking.
