  P2 footage does not show up in Avid

  So I have had AVID 4.0 for a few months now. I am editing a project that was shot with a Panasonic HVX camera, so P2 cards were used. The issues that i have been dealing with is that the footage sometimes shows up or it has media offline. I have tried reconnecting the media. And it does not work. I know the footage works because all of the clips show up and play in Adobe Premiere. What can I do to get all the footage to show up and play in AVID.

  Check your dynamic relink settings.

  Did you use AMA to import the footage? Did you then CONSOLIDATE the media to your media drive, or just start working with the footage as is? Because if you then remove the drive that they are stored on, they will vanish.

  Always best to consolidate, put all the media into the main media folder.

  Did you use AMA to import the footage?
  I didn’t have to import the footage. Soon as I opened the cards on the external hard drive and then created a project, the files just opened up in AVID 4.0.5

  Did you then CONSOLIDATE the media to your media drive, or just start working with the footage as is?
  No I did not Consolidate the media. I just started working with the footage as is. Is it too late for me to consolidate the media. I did try to consolidate one clip and I don’t think it worked. Also it will only let me Consolidate to the external not the Mac HD.

  I guess I should say that I am working on the latest iMac and here are my specs. Mac OS X, Version 10.6.2, Processor 3.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3.

  OK, this is how AMA works.

  You insert a card…AMA detects the card, opens a bin…a special bin…that sees that footage. It doesn’t import it…it just makes clips that points to the media on that card. Now you can either begin editing (but know that you are editing footage that is STILL on the card), or you can choose to CONSOLIDATE the footage from the card to your MEDIA drive. Not your INTERNAL OS drive…no, your MEDIA drive.

  Now, if you do it that way, you really aren’t making a backup of your footage. Because you have imported the footage, and then you might then return the tapeless media back into service by erasing it. Well, that isn’t good because, where is your “tape?” Meaning where is your raw backup? AMA reading directly from a card is good for working quickly, like a quick news story turnaround, but for long term, you need to ARCHIVE.

  Insert the tapeless card, backup the entire contents to a backup hard drive. THEN use AMA to read the backed up folder and either work from that (not recommended…you need to have a backup archive to put on the shelf, just like a tape), or CONSOLIDATE from that to your MEDIA drive. The Media drive must be separate from the backup drive, and separate from the OS drive.
