Importing from DVD
Hi been a while but everything was going smoothly till this little bump, How do I import from a DVD that I made from my Avid. the DVD plays on my DVD player and plays on my Computer, but I get file not supported, when I try importing. this is new to me,so i must be missing a step.

I don’t believe Avid does import dvd which are .vob files. If you change the extension to .mpg it works with Premiere but sometimes it does not bring in the audio. Avid will not import mpeg. You will have to go through another outlet. 3rd party.

Do you have Avid hardware you can hook a DVD player to? If you have the Mojo, MojoSDI, MojoDX, or NitrisDX you can run your DVD player into it, turn off deck control, and capture on the fly. You won’t be able to batch capture if you need to later, but it gets the footage into your system.
Otherwise, check out MPEGStreamclip. A lot of people use it to convert DVD files to quicktime or another format for import.

There are basically two ways as people have layed out before. One hook up a DVD player to your Avid and import as composite. This can be messy and really doesn’t look that good. I’ve had sync issues doing this as well.
The second option is to Demux your DVD. Demuxing takes the VOB files and converts them into a format that the Avid can ingest. I’m lucky, we use Digital Rapids for compression, so I can throw in a DVD, point to the VOB’s and convert to a Quicktime with the Avid codec-which looks pretty good.
There are plenty of demuxers out there, so all you need to do is find one—and if you have the Avid QT codec all the better(worth getting-it’s somewhere on Avid’s website, just not the easiest thing to find).

If you’re on a mac you can use Handbrake or MPEG Streamclip to convert a .vob file to a number of different file formats, including Quicktime, which you can then import into Avid. Both programmes are free and very reliable.
