  • Is MC 4.0 backwards compatible?

I’m a student, editing at home and at school. I started my project on the school’s system:

    Avid MC 3.0.1
    Mac OS X

I transferred it successfully to my home computer:

    Avid MC 4.0.x
    Windows 7

I’d like to be able to edit the project on both machines, meaning it will have to go back and forth between 4.0 and 3.0. (And between Windows and Mac, but I’ve created clones of the media files on separate drives compatible with each system, and that is working fine.) I’m not using any effects yet, so that shouldn’t be an issue.

Has MC 4.0 continued Avid’s trend of supporting backwards compatibility? Thanks!

    Yes, with two exceptions:

    1. If you use color correction on v3.5 and later, those sequences will be incompatible with v3.x and earlier. The solution is to right-click the sequence and “Demote” the sequence in v3.5 or v4.x, then take the bin to the 3.x system.

    2. There has been a slight modification to a part of the DNxHD codec in v4, which means that some specific resolutions may not play back correctly on earlier versions. Fix and more info here:

Be careful not to use different framerates in the same project, this feature only works in 4.0x. Otherwise, it works fine for me.
