HD Monitoring?
Hi all,
I’m looking to find a way to view my HD projects on a HD monitor. Is there any additional equipment I can look into. I’m running Avid Xpress Pro Mojo 5.6 on an HP nw8440. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

The only accurate way to monitor HD on your Avid is to upgrade to Media Composer 4.0 and buy a MojoDX or NitrisDX (and possibly update your computer, if MojoDX and NitrisDX won’t work with it).
You can run your computer card to your HD monitor and enable Full Screen Playback, but it’s not an accurate enough representation for color grading and quality monitoring. For that you need the Mojo or Nitris box.

Why is this exactly? Not calling BS, I just would like an explanation.
I am in the same boat as the OP, and I am not looking forward to going w/out a client monitor for awhile. Even with my Mojo rebate, DX is brutally expensive; and it doesn’t look like Avid has plans on making a stripped down/ cheaper version of the DX.

As far as I understand, it’s sending your computer signal to your monitor so it’s already in the wrong color space (RGB vs. YUV), and any interlaced material will look awful because it’s a progressive signal. You know how bad interlacing looks on your computer monitor? This is basically just taking that signal and throwing to your HD monitor. Going through Avid hardware handles the interlacing correctly so you aren’t looking at tearing and poor quality video.
There may be other more technical reasons but those are the two I know that can cause problems.

I would say that the MojoDX is already stripped down… but cheap it is not.
On the newer MC (4.0.x to 4.0.5) you can get a pretty decent downconvert of HD via the Mojo but it requires a relatively fast system. On the XW8200 I work on, it drops frames when I activate the function (“High quality downconvert”) so I don’t know if your laptop would be enough.
If you really want full HD monitoring, until Avid release a cheaper Mojo, you need ot buy the DX.
