FCP transcode to DNXHD 36 QT Mono audio CH1 & 2
Hello I am working on a DOC shot to SxS from EX1 1080 23.98, The clips get imported using sony software to XDCAM EX (35) quicktime.mov’s
These quick times get then imported to FCP 6.0.5 then re transcoded out in the DNXHD qt wrapper to be delivered to editorial working on Media Composer 2.8 to then get re-imported to the avid media folder as MXF.I recently re installed the avide LE codec package for quictime onto my Mac tower dual core 2.66 running leopard, and FCS suite 2. I do have a Kona 3 card in the 3rd slot but currently the bridge component is not attached.
Here is my transcode problem: My xdcam quicktime files have 2 ch of audio (a1 mono and a2 mono), two mono channels, clearly visible also in the viewer window. When I batch esport the clips using quicktime (costom) select video.. 1080 2398 dnxhd 36 8-bit…. select audio: Linear PCM Mono 48khz 16bit. all settings are in place, then export, now I get 1 mono channel of audio as oposed to 2 mono ones. Why is this? what I would like and expect to have is the same file i submit to re wrap in dnxhd, with out changing the audio.
what am I missing?
Is this going to be a future issue when it comes to final audio, can i replace the mono files by timecode with the original xdcam quicktime audio information?
or… should editorial feed an OMF file from locked picture and then re connect it using automatic duck to the XDCAM quicktimes, then supplying audio sweetening with these?
what would you suggest?

I suggest removing all those steps, upgrade to v4 and work natively with the files via AMA.

Thank you michael upgrade would be a dream, but upgrading in the middle of this… and I would not recommend that myself for any project. The editor chosen has choosen avid and working out of their spare time from what ever rudementary version they have…
I am just the person who makes the files for the editor cause well, i guess they don’t know how to work on their avid system with this camera… with out an upgrade, i guess.

I am still wonder about the strange facto of the audio being re-encoded to just one track, when its natively two mono channels?

You could send your editor the raw media, have them install the Media Composer 4.0 trial (good for 30 days), bring in the footage via AMA then transcode to Avid media and take that media back to their 2.8 Avid. It would be faster and easier than all the importing, exporting, importing, etc…you’re currently doing. Plus, they’d have timecode. Your current workflow is stripping the timecode when you send them the quicktime files to import.

Idid forget to mention I use meta cheater to make their ALE.…I dont believe that baby jesus was born on the 25th of december….. but I believe in Time Code, lol.
If it was not for me having the TC match between the XDCAM Footage and AVID media I would be royally screwed, Thank you metacheater 🙂I would suggest to the editor your freetrial work around…
still why only one channel of mono instead of A1 mono and A2 mono that are in the XDCAM qt… is it a LE codecs version as oposed to the PE avid codec package, of does any one think my qt went bonkers?
of do I I wish the audio configuration to pass trough the dnxhd wrapped quicktime. is this even possible?-CDT

Upgrading would be best. Also: on your end you could use the 30-day trial version of Avid MC, and use that to open the XDCAM files through AMA, then transcode the media (in MC) into DNxHD, and send him the mediafiles and the bins, regardless of his version of MC.
That said, your issue with the QT export is the following. When you order a mono QT export, you will end up with a sum of the present audio tracks. So you get one mono track which has both orignal A1 and A2 in it.
If you need to keep those two tracks separate, make sure that in FCP you have your tracks panned hard left and hard right, then export to QT with STEREO audio. Then you will end up with a 2-track clip (with sound panned hard left/right, but you can change that once imported into MC).
There would be no reason to go back to the original XDCAM audio at any point, as long as you don’t alter the audio tracks.
