Exporting 16:9 to 4:3 with bars
Would really appreciate some help!
I’m working with 16:9 footage and would like to export it to 4:3 with black bars on top and bottom using DVCPro-NTSC codec. Have tried many combinations of settings but am ending up with full frame, squashed footage when importing into a 4:3 project. These are one of many of the setting combinations I’ve been trying…Video Format:
1280×720 (size to fit)Quicktime Format Options:
Movie Settings –
Compression: DV/DVCPRO – NTSC
Quality: Best
Scan Mode: Progressive
Aspect Ratio: 4:3
Dimensions: 720×480 (853×480)
Scale: LetterboxI’m on Avid Media Composer v.3
Is there a better/easier way to do this and retain quality? Many thanks.

Are you in a 720P project? If so, go to your Format tab and change it to SD. Right click on your monitors and uncheck 16:9. You footage should be letterboxed. If it’s not, add a Pan and Scan effect and set your source to 16:9 and your output to 4:3 Letterboxed. That should letterbox your footage–then just export.
You could also switch to SD and transcode your footage to SD.

Thanks Michael but I’m missing something. Yes, I am in a 720p project. I switched the format to Standard and unchecked 16:9 on the monitors but no letterbox. The footage is squashed horizontally. I added pan and scan, changed source and target but no letterbox. Btw, only have 4:3 available for target, not 4:3 letterbox.
I did just figure out that exporting footage using DV Stream w/ DVCPro 4:3 Letterbox works. I then imported into a 4:3 project.
Would really like to get your method to work though.

From the Reformat effects tab, don’t use Pan & Scan, but rather use the “16:9 Letterbox” effect. Or apply a Resize, and set V to .75.
