I’m revising an old project that someone else edited. He has one effect which shows up with an icon that doesn’t indicate an effect. The icon on the clip is the usual pink square but there is no symbol indicating the type of effect and when I click on the effect mode and the effects editor comes up there is no effect in the effects editor. It acts like a key of some sort in the timeline, but I can’t recreate it. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Duane

That means that they used an effect that you don’t have installed on your system. If it’s a key effect it could be a Boris effect, or maybe they had Ultimatte.

Can you contact the original editor to see what effects packages they had installed? There aren’t that many for Avid – Sapphire, Boris, Ultimatte, and maybe one or two more.

I’m on the same system he did the original on and there is a lot of Boris in the project, but it all seems normal except this one effect. However, I think you are on the right track. When I try to open any of the Boris effects I get a message that says something about it being a different version of Boris. Then it goes on and opens Boris anyway. Is it possible that we have upgraded our Boris and its not backward compatable? Thanks for the idea, I’m sure it has something to do with Boris.

If you are on a current system, you can select the record monitor and hit CTRL + I or COMMAND + I on Mac and you get a new dialogue window. One of the selections there allows you to see what effects are used in the timeline. This may show you which effect is missing as long as it’s part of Avid’s AVX database.
