How much RAM can Media Composer 3 actually use?

I just built a machine with 12 gigs, and I’m wondering if MC can actually use it all.

Bonus question: If MC can’t use it all, is Vegas the only video editing software that can?

Avid sees at most about 3GB. It’s just a limitation of a 32-bit app, even though it can run in a 64-bit OS. The extra RAM will be nice if you keep a lot of other apps open–they’ll each have their own RAM to fill instead of a system with just 4GB total, which means those 4GB are shared by Avid, other open apps, and the OS.

    Is Vegas a 64-bit app? I didn’t know that.

I run my Symphony Classic Nitris & Media Composer systems on Windows Vista Business 64-bit, which is a supported OS to run them on. Of the 8GB in each system, a full 4GB’s are available for the application. This is much more than the 2.7GB that you could get running the Avid editors under XP 32-bit. The switch to Vista 64 really saved the day for me.
