HDV into Avid
Hi all,
Just a quick question. I am trying to find the best workflow for HDV footage in Avid. I recently completed a 2 hour edit in HDV and was slightly irritated by the fact that I couldn’t export a qt reference, so I exported an uncompressed QT, and encoded that for DVD. It was a pain, but the quality was a lot better than SD.
What I am now wondering is:
1. What is the benefit of transcoding to DNxHD to export a qt ref? If I’m encoding it anyway is it not easier to just export the edit uncompressed as it takes the same amount of time and space, or are there other benefits?
2. Am I going to gain quality by working in HDV and then compressing to SD for DVD? Would the quality be the same if it were shot in HDV and then downconverted as I digitize? This would make things easier, however I feel that the quality must be better if digitized in HDV format.
Any tips would be very much appreciated as it seems there must be simpler ways of maintaining the quality.
Many thanks in advance,
Simon
