  • Digitizing HDV into 720p 599.94 project?

    Hey all,

I am having dificulties digitizing footage shot on HDV into a 720p 59.94 project. I know nothing about HDV, and I’m beginning to think that after 5 years in the business, I know nothing about anything anymore.

The only project type that allowed me to capture (not thru the Adrenaline harware by the way, but straight thru 1394 firewire) was 1080i 59.94, although the avid gives other options such as 720p 29.97 and 30i – and then yet other options for resolution in the capture tool for HDV 1080i or DVCPro HD. I won’t even go into raster types.

All the different format and frame rates are starting to hurt my head and I can’t figure out what I am doing wrong. Am I trying to add apples with oranges? Should I just do this in Final Cut and stop fighting the Avid?

    Thanks!

    Craig

HDV doesn’t run at 59.94…neither 720p nor 1080. In both formats it runs at 29.97…but the frame size is dependant on what camera you used. Only the JVC model records 720p…all others, Sony and Canon, shoot 1080i. So if you are capturing via firewire you need to use the 1080i60 (60 interlaced fields, not frames per second) if you are capturing from a Sony or Canon, and 720p30 if from a JVC camera.

You cannot capture as another format via firewire…you can only bring it in as the format it was shot. If you had Avid hardware, then you could capture it in a different format.

Even Final Cut Pro acts this way…if it is 1080 and you are capturing via firewire, you can only capture as 1080. You’d need a capture card to capture as any other format.

HD is complicated…knowing everything is tough. But knowing what format you have and the limitations of the NLE are key in making this process go smoothly.

Shane, thank you for your help, it’s beginning to make a little more sense.

Although I am now confused when you say HDV doesn’t run at 59.94 but I need to capture via firewire at 1080i/60. For clarification, is 60 interlaced fields not the same as 59.94?

Also, you mention if I have Avid hardware, which I do have an Adrenaline, I can capture differently. I tried, but was unable to do so via firewire thru the DNA port. Our Sony HDV deck doesn’t have any other HD outs that I know of (it has s-video, component out, and composite RCA outs, no HD SDI outs)

To get to the root of the problem, is it going to be possible at all to capture this HDV footage into my 720p59.94 project? (The bulk of my footage was shot in P2 at 720p24p)

Sorry for the confusion, but I’m just trying to wrap my head around this stuff, and it seems a lot of times the confusion comes from shortcuts in speech. Is there an HD bible out there I could buy?

    Thanks again,

    Craig

[Craig Hirshberg] “For clarification, is 60 interlaced fields not the same as 59.94?”

COrrect. 60i is 29.97…60 interlaced fields…and two fields per frame. DVCPRO HD 720p60 is 60 actual frames running at 59.94fps. ANd the higher end HDCAM and D5 decks do that frame rate as well. Although I think at 1080 the only one that can handle that is the HDCAM SR…but dont’ quote me on that.

It is actually best to start a NEW topic…as this is DVCPRO HD related and not HDV.

You’ll get quicker response too, and from more people, as it will be near the top.
