This may sound strange but here goes:

I exported a QT reference file out of Avid on to my fire wire drive (this is the same drive where the avp files and the media files are stored). Now I am trying to view the QT file on a machine that does not have Avid installed on it (but has the fire wire drive that has the avid files and qt reference files on it). Is there a codec, plug-in etc. that I can download to enable this computer to read these files? Or can they only be viewed on machines that have avid installed?

Indeed there is – you want the free Avid codec pack (LE). Search for it on avids site – and if you still can’t find it let me know your email address and I’ll send it to you. Its around 6MB.

    Happy hunting,

There is a codec for this, but if you need to take a QT ref onto a machine that doesn’t have Avid installed in the future then just unselect the “Use Avid Codec” in the export settings.
