  transcoding in MC 2.8

  I’m in need of some help here. I am editing on my MacPro laptop and using MC 2.8. I shot a bunch of interviews for a short film on DVCPro50 and I want to use some b-roll that was shot in 720p30fps. When I open the HD footage bin in the 30i project and transcode the clips to dvcpro50 the aspect ratios get all screwed up on the transcoded clips. It looks like the image is stretched vertically.

  Any solutions? I thought this was how you could edit with HD and SD footage in the same project – by transcoding, but I didn’t expect this result. Any help is appreciated.

  Sounds like you now have 16:9 anamorphic footage. Apply a Pan and Scan (I think it’s under the Reformat category in your Effects Palette) and drop a 16:9 reformat effect on it. It will unstretch your footage and letterbox it.

  If you don’t want it letterboxed, apply a Pan and Scan, set the source to 16:9 Anamorphic and the result (or whatever the second option is) to 4:3. It will unstretch your footage and centercut it (I think these are the right options–not in front of an Avid right now). This will cut off the sides of your 16:9 footage but you won’t have the letterbox.
