Output OMF2 for Audio Guy
I’ve completed a re-cut on a 720p 23.98 project on my 5.7 Avid Express Pro and am at the stage of creating the audio embedded OMF2 file for delivery.
First of all, while in my 720p project there is no OMF1 or 2 available as an ‘export as’ option.
I’been on the Forum on the Avid site and found that I am not the only one with this problem. The thread that I found with the same topic was posted Feb 2007. The solution, suggested by a helpful fellow in Melbourne, was to make a new bin and sequence, delete video tracks and open that bin in a new standard def project.
I did that and voila… OMF2 and OMF1 are available in the ‘Export as’ menu.I output the file and got error msg: OMF can’t use MXF files to create OMF2 emded file…
So, I transcoded first, using right click and transcode option and then output… This time it worked, BUT:The file is not opening in ProTools for my audio guy…
The file was 2.12GB. Maybe it’s too big (heard about 2GB file size limitation). It was zipped and emailed (maybe it got corrupted) I think I’m close…
Next I will try breaking film in to reels to output smaller OMF2s that he can string together in ProTools.Any thoughts?

If the version of ProTools is new enough, you can export as AAF and avoid all the extra steps.

That’s great to know. Actually I just found out that the software he is using is Cakewalk, not ProTools.

Also: don’t zip OMF files. It’s likely to cause file corruption, at least that has been my experience.

As far I can tell, Avid removed OMF functionality for HD projects, so the only route is AAF, which works perfectly with Pro-Tools. AAF also removes the 2GB limit.
Our problem is that our audio post is done on Sony Vegas (Our guy, who teaches Pro-Tools prefers to work on Vegas) and Vegas will not open our Avid AAF files….so he has to go downstairs to a Pro-Tools suite, open the AAF in Pro-Tools, then re-export as an AAF and Vegas will read that AAF….not cool.

Yes, there is NO OMF in HD. The media is MXF and the method of moving around is AAF.

Or you switch the project type to SD, then choose to export as OMF.

Unfortunately, you can’t switch from 720 projects to SD. Once yo you 720 in Avid, you are landlocked there.
