2 Gig limit on Quick time export from Avid
I am having trouble exporting an HDV sequence from Avid to a quick time movie. About 20 minutes into the export I get an error message saying that the file will exceed the 2GB limit for export. Is there somewher in the setting to increase the file size limit, or am I stuck exporting little bits of the sequence and then putting it back together in my DVD authoring program.

That’s weird. I’ve often exported 4+ GB QT’s from Avid, ever since the Meridien days.

Where are you exporting to? I’ve had problems with the cheap USB drives. They usually come formatted as FAT32. Reformat to NTFS, and its golden. Also, check and make sure your not exporting AVI.

Also, is there a reason for not exporting a reference movie to take into your authoring/encoding program?

The 2GB limit is a Windows thing. It’s not Avid, it’s not Quicktime, and as far as I know there is not way around it. If you look at your MediaFiles folder on your Media drive, you will see that the Avid breaks files into 2GB sections.

It’s not a Windows thing, it may be a FAT thing. Some of my MXF mediafiles are well over 2GB.

“The 2GB limit for .avi files and FAT32 formatted disks is a Windows limitation and doesn’t apply to Quicktime or OMF or MXF files.
The reason you might see MXF or OMF files at 2GB or under is because you haven’t changed your capture settings (it defaults to breaking files up in 2GB chunks). I’ve exported 6GB quicktimes, and I have MXF files that are 4GB. That’s not the Windows limitation. The limitation is the type of .avi Avid exports, which is old and was limited to 2GB.

Thanks for your input. I’m definately exporting a quick time file. I can’t do a QT reference because AVID will not allow a QT reference from an HDV sequence. The external drive I tried exporting to is an FAT file format, but I also tried sending it to the desktop of my machine. I’ll try reformating the drive and try that.

You can export a QT reference if you mix down your entire sequence first. As long as you have no motion effects, this works. If you do have speed changes, lay it off to tape first then recpature your master show as one file. You can then export that as a QT reference with no probs.
now aint that a crock we have to do all that just to make the DVD they advertised we could seemlessly make 4 years ago?
