Is there a way to change or trick the metadata in a DNx file without re-encoding? We will be receiving hard drives with DNx footage recorded with an EVS at 100Megs. The software that manages our digital archives (not Unity) likes DNx145. I will be running some tests this weekend with the EVS MediaXchange but even so we are trying to avoid having to batch re-encode these files before adding them to our library. I was thinking there might be a program similar to Metacheater but for Windows based computers running Avid. Any thoughts? We have an Adrenaline system right now but will be upgrading all of our Avid suites to MC 3.0 in the next few weeks.

could someone at least confirm that this is not possible or probably can’t be done? anyone?

I wouldn’t think it is possible. The bitrate has more implications than just a metadata header really.

I wouldn’t think that any DNxHD-supporting application would have any real issues with what bitrate the footage was, it’s all the same format essentially.

    Dylan,
That’s exactly what I thought initially. I’m just going off of what I’ve been told by my boss about our new media asset management system. When I asked to double check he was very clear that the MAM would need a certain DNx bit rate (145Megs to be exact.) I’ll dig deeper into it and see what I can find.

Well, FFMpeg now includes native DNxHD support. It could be worth a look to see if that can be used somehow to streamline the conversion process if it has to happen.

Our EVS MediaXchange will most likely handle a cross conversion just fine. I’ve done a bit of research. Seems we’re getting a media management system from Ardendo. It has a newscutter component that you can use to make rough cuts with and then send to an Avid workstation, which is a kind of video editor. This is the reason it “likes” DNx145. Not for the media management per se but because their little editor only uses one format (still, kind of odd?)
