Import video
Posted by Paolomart on August 12, 2008 at 1:33 pmHi everybody.
I’d like to know what is the best and fastest way/codec to import a video into AVID MC.
Right now I use QT with AVID codec and color space 601 , but it take like 30 sec to import a 2 min video through fast import.
Is there any faster way?Thanks.

August 12, 2008 at 6:11 pmYes, but that requires a high geek level, and only works for certain codecs.
Do a google search for INGEX.But 30 seconds for a 2 min. clip is 4 times faster than RT.
Do you have so much stuff to import that it really matters?

August 13, 2008 at 10:19 amYes, sometimes I have to import something like 1 hour footage so it takes really a while.
I don’t get why AVID needs to recode a QT while other softwares, premiere i.e., just do it RT.Thanks.

Avid does NOT re-encode when you do a “fast” import, it just copies the file to the Avid MediaFiles folder (or OMF folder) in its own format. So basicly it’s drive speed that is the limiting factor. If you want faster, i can create something that will create Avid files inside an Avid Mediafiles folder so you just have to open the media tool to get them into your bin. You also can have a project, bin name, reelname and timecode attached to the clip.
But that only works for specific resolutions/codecs.
I take it you’re in NTSC, what codecs do you use?
And, what platform are you on?Bouke

August 13, 2008 at 10:33 amHi Bouke. Thanks a lot for your reply.
I really thought that AVID was re-encoding files because it took so long.I am using MediaComposer Mojo on HP workstation (PC).
Usually cameraman grab footage on mediapac HD which can grab AVI, QT or MXF i thinh op1a which I don’t know if it’s avid compatible.
What I need to do is just copy those files in the fastes way to a Bin.
Needless to say, the AVI or QT generated from the converter attached to the camera and Hard drive does not support the fast import. Thanks again.

And, are you in Pal or NTSC?Bouke
