4:3 Grid within the 16:9 Monitors
We use Avid NewsCutter at our station and we will be shooting everying in 16:9 format soon. My question is, does Avid NewsCutter have a setting where I can put a 4:3 (safe area) grid in the 16:9 preview and timeline monitors? I’ve looked around and read through the manual but can not find a solution.

Look to see if you have “grid” in your settings. From there you have lots of options as to how you want to see your grid. One of them is 4:3 inside 16:9. Start there and customize as needed.

Thanks but I tried that and it’s like adding an effect. I would have to add that Pan and Scan effect to every clip to make that work. It’s not a necessity but something I thought I would look for. Thank you though.

You are looking at the reformat in the FX tab. Look at the settings tab of the project window for Grid. Then there is a grid button on the button palette you can map to where you need it.
I have never used NewsCutter and I am assuming the settings are the same as MC.

As Michael said, the setting in MC and XpressPro can be found under the Grid settings in Avid’s settings tab. I use this particular setup a lot myself. The outer (action safe) lines in that setting are very close to 14:9 title safe, which is often handy too.
If you still have no luck, I have a set of PSD files I’ve created with all the BBC/EBU frame safety margins in them. framesizes.zip
