  • Consolidating clip doesn’t associate with current project

Posted by Jason Brown on June 17, 2008 at 1:50 pm

    Hey everyone,

I frequently have the need to use media from one project in another. To avoid accidentally deleting clips that are used in other projects, I always consolidate the clip…by doing so in the new project I want the media in, it always associates the clip to the new project. But for some reason, it isn’t re-associating the project with this clip I’m working with.

    Any ideas?

I have an update to my issue.

I can consolidate the clip one time in the original project. Then open the 2nd project and consolidate the .new clip in the new project and it DOES change the project association!

    How strange is that?

    Jason,

Nothing strange about it. Anytime Avid creates ANY piece of media, it associates that media to the project you are currently IN.

You have the right idea about consolidating to avoid accidental deletion, but you are missing a few steps. Here is what i suggest:

Project ABC has a few clips that you would like to use in project DEF.
Open project DEF and OPEN BIN from project ABC. Select the clips you would like to consolidate. Once complete, move the consolidated clips into a bin in project DEF. You will notice that the new clips are “tagged” with the new project name, because, that is where you consolidated them from. This way, both sets of clips are now separated by project and safe from accidental deletion.

    Cheers.

    Hey Sal,

Thanks for responding…since you are the ONLY person who has interest in helping me, I’ll speak directly to you!

[Sal Fabbri] “Nothing strange about it.”

There is actually something strange…because when I do exactly what you said…

    Digitize media in Project 01

    Open Project 02

Open bin in project window from Project 01

    *Consolidate media*

I have clips that will not re-associate with the new project after consolidation. They remain associated to the original file.

(keep in mind for some reason I only have this problem with a few projects…I do this all the time and I’ve only had this problem twice since I’ve been consolidating media to prevent accidental deletion)

    HERE’S THE CATCH:

If I first consolidate the media in project 01

    Then open Project 02

    *Consolidate newly consolidated clip*

It DOES change the project association.

I have tried everything I can think of. Trashing database files…consolidating with other projects. But for some reason I have a few projects that I can’t change the project association of the clip by doing a consolidation in a new project.

I’m working on an older Meridien board with MC v11.1

I appreciate the help…if you have any ideas. I can repeat a process more times than I should need to…but I just hate when things don’t work correctly. I like to try and figure it out.

I need to accomplish this same thing and have been working all morning to solve it… Can someone please chime in here.

    LOL totally frustrating.

I have a project that has been revised so many times, that I just want to start over and re capturing is not an option because so many of the tapes are well….no more.

    Thanks for any assistance… should I find a solution… I’ll post it.

    Okay… DISCO…

    consolidate clips

copy those clips into new bin in current project

    Consolidate those clips

    Open bin with Timeline

Select Bin Display – show reference clips…

Check to make sure they are offline

If not…. SHIFT RIGHT CLICK – UNLINK

    Change Bin Display BACK

Select the Sequence and RELINK TO CURRENT!

    MOOOOO! Go COW!

    Life. Style. Never a Shortcut.

No one knows everything, everyone knows something and sometimes we can’t remember
anything… that when we go to the COW!
